High Cholesterol

High Cholesterol

Blocked arteries can lead to stroke. Learn more about Carotid ultrasound
Many strokes that lead to death or disability for thousands of people are caused from cholesterol or fat build up in the neck vessels called the carotid artery. Once these vessels build up enough fat, a piece may break off and travel to the brain. When this occurs for a short period, oxygen supply is lost to the brain and dizziness occurs. When artery blockage occurs for longer than 72 hours, brain cells die and permanent damage and loss of function occurs (For ex. Loss of speech, weakened side of the body).
Patients with high cholesterol should consider monitoring their cholesterol levels every 3 to 6 months with their doctor and consider checking the carotid and other arterial blood vessels for obstruction.
